David Correa Artist Statement
Artist Statement
As an artist I aim to fully explore the ideas of control and the lack there of through the constriction of the human. By creating clothing, attachments and prosthetics that do not allow for full movement of the human body, I am displaying an absence of control over one’s self. However, I also have begun exploring the idea of showing control by allowing the user (usually myself) to do other tasks while wearing these “constriction suits.” This in turn has allowed me to translate my sculptures into performances. The performances mainly consist of the ability to paint through the use of the suit, often in a way that the suit is specifically designed to.
My work is heavily inspired by my economic situation. Through-out my life my mother and I have faced many economic troubles which resulted in a difficult upbringing, however they have also allowed me to explore the very interesting relationship between limitations and the ability to work either around or with them. Though I grew up with many limitations economically which did not allow me to have things such as a bed and at moments even water and power (which was incredibly constricting) I also grew with an interestingly Large sense of freedom due to my mother constantly working and therefore having the liberty to do much of what I wanted. I aim to explore these ideas through wearable sculptures.

Artist Statement
Most of my past work has consisted of experimentation
because I was trying to find a concept and style that felt personal and natural
to me. Last year was a significant year in artistic growth because I started to
find a voice for myself that felt authentic and successful. This year, I want
to polish up and establish my portfolio for colleges and any other artistic
decisions I make in the future. I am interested in psychology, emotional
communication, existentialist ideas, and raising awareness against mental
health stigmas in society. Creating art has become a major aspect of my life
because it became therapy for my depression and anxiety. I have struggled with
emotional communication all my life so my art has become a way for me to
express my troubles with others in a healthy way. Putting my emotions out into
the world in a way that feels valid and productive is helpful for myself
personally and career-wise. Becoming a
gallery artist is a main goal of mine. I have found myself moving away from
producing 2-D work and moving into 3-D media and installations. I want my work
to be interactive and I want to engage with the audience since my work has to
do with communication.

Artist Statement:
I am a storyteller
thanks to my father. He is a comedian, which means I grew an environment where
theater, music and art surrounded me. My father used theater to express his
stories and I discovered fine art. Much of my artwork consists of
illustrations, storyboarding, and graphic novels. When art cannot fully express
every minute detail I switch to writing. Writing is an effective tool that
benefits my artwork simultaneously. The sources for my narratives derive mostly
from real life.
My creative process consists of
borrowing the identity of strangers I come across with. Their demeanor is so
odd to me that I find a way to incorporate them in my artwork, basing my
characters from their essence. I primarily focus on the people relationships
surrounding my life and using different characters as manifestations of myself.
Illustrating large pieces with an array of people fascinates me. It is interesting
to see the different personalities interact with each other and observe how
they adapt to conflicting situations.
